The Fuel Savings Already Hiding in Your Fleet

A predictable 3% to 8% of fleet fuel spend is recoverable waste — hiding in idle time, inefficient assets, and efficiency drift. Here is where it hides, and a calculator to size yours.

Most fleets treat fuel as a fixed cost. Diesel price, routes, payload — set the lanes, pay the bill. Most of the spend genuinely is fixed. But a predictable slice of it is not, and that slice is worth finding.

Across the fleets running CleanFreight, 3% to 8% of annual fuel spend consistently turns out to be recoverable waste — fuel burned by idling, inefficient assets, route variance, and slow efficiency drift that no one is watching week to week. It almost never shows up as one big line item. It hides in small amounts
    spread across the whole fleet.

    Where the waste actually hides

Four patterns account for nearly all recoverable fuel:

    • Idle burn. Engine-on, not-moving time. A truck idling three hours a day burns roughly nine litres it
never needed — every working day, all year.
    • High-consumption assets. Trucks running well above their peer benchmark for the same duty cycle. Same
      lane, same load, more fuel.
    • Efficiency drift. A vehicle slowly getting worse than its own historical norm. A dragging brake or
failing injector shows up here weeks before a fault code does.
    • Route variance. The same lane run 10–20% heavier on fuel than its established baseline.

None of these require new hardware. The signal is already in the telematics data you are paying for — it just
is not being turned into dollars.

    What it is worth

Fuel is one of the largest controllable costs in commercial trucking. Put a number on it:

A fleet spending $2,000,000 a year on diesel is typically carrying $60,000 to $160,000 in recoverable
waste. Where you land in that range depends on how disciplined the operation already is — fleets with active
idle policies and tight preventive maintenance sit near the bottom; fleets that have never measured it sit near the top.

The only way to know your number is to estimate it against your own spend.

Enter your fleet size and annual fuel spend below. You will see what a 3%, 5%, and 8% recovery is worth — the
same three scenarios CleanFreight reports against once your telematics data is connected.

    From estimate to verified savings

The figure above is an estimate. CleanFreight's job is to turn it into a measured one.

It connects to your existing telematics provider — Samsara, Motive, Geotab, or ISAAC — builds a per-vehicle
baseline, and surfaces the specific trucks, drivers, routes, and locations where fuel is leaking. Each finding becomes a tracked action with an owner.

And nothing is counted until it is real: a recommended action only moves to captured savings after two to
four weeks of telematics data confirm the improvement. No estimates dressed up as results.

If the number from the calculator looks worth chasing, the next step is connecting your data and seeing the
    verified figure.

    One-time report

See what your own fleet is wasting

A Fleet Fuel Waste Assessment turns 12 months of your telematics data into one report: how much fuel is recoverable, where it goes, and the 10 trucks to fix first. CA$499, one time.
